The 2021 Bannockburn Vineyard Pinot Noir is the first of four highly aromatic Pinot Noirs from Valli on the bench here today. On the nose, it leads with plum jam, mulberry, black cherry and star anise, salted licorice and a hint of raw cocoa. In the mouth, the wine is lightly framed but silky smooth and flows evenly and persistently across the palate. Supple. Spicy and warm through the finish. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. The 2021 Pinot Noir Bannockburn Vineyard is a silky, flowing style with a fineness of tannin that coats the palate. It's not as burly as some Bannockburn cuvees, with the vineyard sitting at 350 meters, bringing a cooling influence and delaying ripening, yet there is a generosity here. An amazing coating of tannin provides a sensation that's reminiscent of slipping a hot water bottle into its cover. The lengthy finish is fragrant with a fine herbal quality and mixed spice alongside cherry fruit. This is a wine that sneaks up on you and leaves your pleasantly surprised. Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous
