The 2022 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard, from 32-year-old vines, was harvested on August 15, a week earlier than ever before, grape grower Andy Smith notes. Frost in the spring drastically lowered Chardonnay yields at Hyde (only 475 cases were made), although what remained was "immediately fantastic," Smith says. It opens with the seashell and saline touches characteristic of this vineyard, before unfurling exotic scents of lemongrass, stone fruit, toast and smoky flint. The light-bodied palate is youthfully coiled and electric. Its saline-tinged flavors are complemented by shimmery acidity and a silken texture, and it has a very long finish. The 2022 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is a textured, creamy wine with all the character that is typical of this site. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers, tangerine peel, white pepper and a kiss of spice build nicely in the glass. Overall, this is a somewhat quiet expression of Hyde. Antonio Galloni, Vinous
